Home Nursing Care – Nurses at Home Malaysia Shares Their Mission

“How can we help?” That is the first thing Asok Nair, the Managing Director of Nurses at Home, asked when I called about in-home nursing care for my grandmother. Being in a situation where you don’t know what to do, having an experienced person take away the stress and anxiety of getting specialized care for a loved one was invaluable.

This month, we highlight Nurses At Home (NAH), a customer of Cube for more than a year now. NAH is a nursing solutions company, providing families and corporations with cutting-edge nursing services that are safe, competent, and reliable. NAH offers services to the patient’s homes, hospitals, clinics, and nursing homes.

Despite his overwhelming schedule, Asok took the time to answer our questions via email. We talked about NAH’ mission and where they are now.

The Need for Home Nursing Care

Like most businesses, NAH started off with an unfulfilled need.

Asok tells us that “NAH was established by our founders 16 years ago, arising out of experiences from their own family care needs. It was clear the market needed a professionally run, hospital-linked provider. At that time, the cluster of ‘agencies’ that filled the market was typically run by retired nursing professionals.”

“These, while often offering compassionate and sincere nursing care, lacked standards and used outdated methods and technologies. NAH sought to modernize this care at home with state-of-the-art nursing techniques and materials, working with market-leading companies that designed and developed these.”

NAH aims to advocate that home nursing care does not only mean care for the elderly or palliative home care. Their services may range from simple follow-up visits to comprehensive care plans for bedside care.

Their home nursing care encompasses disciplines such as physiotherapy, nutrition, and caregiver training. The training is done in an integrated manner to provide the best care for the patient. NAH’s capabilities allow doctors and patients to utilize home-based care as an essential tool in promoting recovery and continuous care.

Asok explained that their team of 50+ nurses comprises full-time and part-time and freelance specialists in their field.

When asked about their nurses’ screening process, Asok said, “The screening for a home nurse starts with the same expectations as any hospital or medical center does: competent, registered nurses with a passion for caring for others.

However, the home nurse has a totally new dimension that we have had to develop. Unlike in a hospital, the nurse has no supervisor or leader to oversee her care in the home. Besides, she needs to be mature, confident of her skills, and keep a super cool head in any emergencies. While she is always supported by senior leaders from our office, she is at the battlefront and needs to handle it.”

Their testimonial page is adorned with heartfelt stories on the positive impact they had on patients’ and families’ lives. We asked Asok to give us an account of an experience that stood out for him.

“My favourite one was our privilege to come to the aid of a family in dire need. Their child, aged 12, was born with Cerebral Palsy and cared for at a specialist centre during the day. However, one day he was diagnosed with chickenpox. For the safety of the rest of the children at the centre, they could not send him there.”

“The parents were at wit’s end as they had no idea how to manage this child at home. They wanted him home and to be by his side, so they reached out to NAH. We were able to care for and treat the child in his own home and with parents nearby. He recovered well from the episode and went back to his daily life after. We were so happy to have played a part in this family’s hour of need.”

The Need for Self Storage

To meet the market’s changing needs for home nursing care and keep a lean, cost-effective back-end operation, Asok decided to move their business from a shop lot premise into a business centre. It was a one-stop-shop with an excellent internet connection and all the facilities at one competitive price. That meant they needed cost-effective, easily accessible storage space for their records and equipment. That is when Cube came into the picture.”

Asok explained that as part of their legal requirements, their confidential medical records are to be kept and made available for 6 years. Cube provided a clean, dry, and safe document storage space for the records and equipment alike. They were also able to access the space when needed.

As a service provider like NAH, we aim to provide the best solutions and services to our customers. We are glad to be a small part of NAH’s journey and the lives of patients they have touched.
