The National Railway Museum Logo

The National Railway Museum proudly represents over 300 years of Britain’s railway history and is home to the Nation’s most iconic and remarkably well-preserved trains and locomotives. With over 6000 objects of engineering excellence on display, the museum has won many awards, including the European Museum of the Year Award in 2001.

The Project

The Innovation Platform Exhibition is a temporary exhibition from the National Railway Museum celebrating ground-breaking ideas and achievements from the contemporary rail industry. Showcasing the latest innovations in rail development, it will run as four thematic seasons covering Autonomous Technology, Decarbonisation, Smart Cities and Communities over the course of two years. Each thematic season will last six months, beginning on site at the National Railway Museum before moving to Locomotion in Shildon for a continuing six months. It is a collective opportunity for the Science Museum Group and their partners in the rail sector to showcase the latest and greatest in rail technology to the public.

The National Railway Museum required the transportation of objects between seasons and locations of the exhibition, with scope for the project to be extended pending successful completion of works.  A complicated four-phase programme commencing end of 2022, it runs throughout 2023 and demands a wealth of knowledge, expertise, and dedication to execute.

The Solution

The main objective for our Cube Relocations Specialist Movers, is to handle each thematic season’s transfer of specialty items with significant weight and size with the utmost care. With a broad wealth of experience to draw upon, we have successfully completed a number of projects for the Science Museum Group in the past including The Natural History Museum and most recently, The Imperial War Museum

Our Cube Relocations’ heavy relocations division has decades of experience, all members of staff are trained, tested and receive regular updates as lifting technology evolves. The team have moved a multitude of museum objects and have extensive experience in moving machinery and process equipment – CHP Units, Milling Machines, Lathes, CNC Machines and 3D Printers to name but a few.

During the span of the project, the team will use Professional Packing Materials and Specialist Lifting and Moving Equipment to ensure a seamless relocation for the Museum’s cutting-edge objects.

The Process

Each of the four phases are a Two Day Programme. Day One our fleet’s 7.5 Ton Tail-lift Box and Luton Tail-lift vehicles are used to transport larger, irregular sized objects to their destination. Day Two, our crew unloads and instals in situ in accordance with the client’s site plan.
